Shepherding Rapid Change: Visuals to Ponder

(A. Solano)

Visuals often serve as powerful tools, especially when we're too busy to read dense books and articles on leadership. Here are three visuals to ponder as educational leaders shepherd rapid change that could very well change their campuses forever.

People will remember a leader's behavior, especially in times of crisis. Symbolism plays an important role. If a leader lacks abilities as the challenges significantly increase, it's still important to show a calm, cool, and collective appearance for the sake of the organization. Excessive outward panic and stress can lead to treating people with a lack of kindness, and it can cause an organization to become paralyzed in the midst of a crisis. (Interestingly, we can learn much about leadership from the artist, Bob Ross of The Joy of Painting.)

(Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Positive Psychology.)

During a crisis, effective leaders are not afraid to reflect on the past and present, and articulate forward-thinking strategic narratives.

(MIT Sloan Review)

Effective leaders proactively work to recognize and fill in the missing pieces of the "change puzzle."

(For a brief description, see Change)

I believe campuses will emerge stronger, better, and kinder when this is over, but it will depend on the quality of the leadership.
